There are a plethora of business networking events each week in London. Some are targeted by industry but many are geared more generally to SMEs. Events such as our very own Evening Standard Business Connections nights present great opportunities for you to increase your network and potentially your client base providing that you have a structured approach. So how do you get more out of networking? Below are 10 tips.

  • Research the events that you are planning to attend and read the reviews of previous events.
  • Have an elevator pitch to present your company but ensure that you are able to deliver it naturally. Note – This is not as easy task.
  • Decide on your business card strategy before you enter the venue and avoid the scattergun approach because it will deliver little return. Are you going to only collect cards from people genuinely of interest?
  • Rather than business cards if you have written a book or have product samples these will be for more effective ways of creating a positive impression and people are more likely to remember you.
  • Business networking is not speed dating – do not try to speak to everyone. Focus on trying to have perhaps 3 or 4 great conversations with people chosen pretty much at random on the night (unless you were sent an attendee list beforehand).
  • If you meet two people separately who will be of interest to each other make a point of introducing them.
  • Remember to evaluate the events you attend 4-6 weeks afterwards. Did those hot leads actually turn into business?
  • Wear a smile and adopt a positive demeanour at all times – if you’ve had a stressful day – leave it behind.
  • Avoid spending too much time with people you’ve already met at previous events or with colleagues.
  • Keep your networking events varied and introduce new ones whenever they seem suitable.
